Women in Motion: Midlife Program

Menopause is defined as 12 consecutive months without a menstrual period. Every woman will experience menopause, whether it occurs naturally or is surgically induced. Research now shows that many of the impacts of menopause can begin 5–10 years before menopause itself, making this pre-transition period essential for optimizing midlife health.

Our Midlife Program features three clinicians who specialize in pelvic health, orthopedics, and midlife care. During the midlife transition, hormonal changes affect the entire body, and our team is ready to support your musculoskeletal system and overall wellness.

Common Concerns We Address:

  • Bone Density: Achy joints, increased risk of stress fractures, low back and hip pain

  • Muscle Health: Delayed healing, higher risk of tendonitis, muscle tears, and pain

  • Vaginal Tissue Atrophy: Painful intercourse, dryness, itchiness, increased risk of UTIs and yeast infections

  • Pelvic Floor Muscle Dysfunction: Urinary incontinence, pelvic organ prolapse, constipation

  • Bladder Changes: Increased urinary frequency, urgency, and leakage

  • Sexual Dysfunction: Decreased or absent orgasms, pain with penetration, leakage during orgasm

  • Increased Adipose Tissue: Difficulty losing weight, challenges activating the right muscles, increased injury risk

We understand that meaningful change takes time. Our comprehensive program spans 12–18 months and includes a thorough assessment of your entire musculoskeletal system.

Program Structure:

Three 75-Minute Initial Visits:

  • Visit 1: Medical History Review

    We review your medical history, including comorbidities, past surgeries, injuries, and current concerns. This allows us to plan your orthopedic assessment and identify any referrals you may benefit from. We also use intake forms from the National Menopause Association to ensure a thorough evaluation of all body systems.

  • Visit 2: Orthopedic Exam

    A comprehensive assessment of your musculoskeletal system to identify compensatory patterns and asymmetries.

  • Visit 3: Pelvic and Abdominal Assessment

    A focused examination of your pelvic, abdominal, and sexual health.

Six to Eight 60-Minute Follow-Up Visits:

During these visits, we use Blood Flow Restriction (BFR) Therapy for 30 minutes to build the foundation of muscle hypertrophy. The remaining 30 minutes are used to address any identified orthopedic or pelvic health concerns and to develop a stability and postural program.

BFR Therapy is FDA-approved for muscle hypertrophy and is an effective method for promoting muscle growth. If you have a cardiac history that limits the use of BFR, we will adapt the program to include alternative strength-training methods.

Twelve Monthly 60-Minute Visits:

By this stage, the foundation of your program has been established. We use these monthly visits to reassess your progress, check in, and advance your home strength program.

You will leave each of these sessions with a home program that includes both strength training and mobility/stability exercises. Over the course of these 12 visits (one year), you can expect to see noticeable muscle gains, improved bone health and sexual health, and develop a deeper understanding of how to transition into lifelong wellness.

When to Start the Program:

The average age of menopause is 51, but our program is suitable for anyone between the ages of 40 and 60. If you have a history of cancer or ovarian or uterine surgery that has impacted your hormones or caused early menopause, we can tailor our program to meet your specific needs.

We also have oncology rehabilitation specialists on our team who work closely with our midlife rehab specialists to ensure your care is mindful of any oncology protocols for lymphedema management and postoperative recovery, if applicable.
