Therapeutic Ultrasound for Mastitis

Relief from Breastfeeding Pain, Backed by Science.

60% of mothers in the United States report that they did not breastfeed as long as they planned with one of the top primary reasons being Breast pain.

Some of the most common reasons for breast pain while breastfeeding are clogged milk ducts and mastitis which are now considered a spectrum of conditions caused by inflammation in the breast.

In 2020 the Academy of Breastfeeding Medicine published in its clinical guidelines that therapeutic ultrasound should be considered a conservative treatment for conditions on the mastitis spectrum.

What is therapeutic Ultrasound

Therapeutic ultrasound uses high-frequency sound waves to promote tissue healing, reduce inflammation, and break down clogged ducts or thickened milk.

According to the research women experiencing symptoms of a clogged milk duct that received an average of 3.3 therapeutic ultrasound treatments were able to:

  • Improve milk flow

  • Resolve clogged milk ducts and prevent reoccurrence

  • Prevent the inflammatory cascade (mastitis & breast abscess)

  • Reduce pain levels

We always recommend a full visit with our IBCLC to clinically diagnose the cause of your breast pain and address any underlying issues, but these services can also be booked separately without an IBCLC consultation.
